We use imagery all the time. It is the natural language of the unconscious. When we daydream we leave our “realities” behind and enter a different world. When we read a book our mind paints the picture of the characters and the landscape. When we pray, meditate, visualize, affirm, or access our intuition we are using imagery by directing our attention within ourselves.

Interactive Guided Imagery SM is an extraordinary way of using your five senses and your imagination to access your own creative resources and wisdom.

Mind-Body Connection

“So great a power is there of the soul upon the body, that whichever way the soul imagines and dreams, thither doth it lead the body.”    --Agrippa, 1510

Imagery allows us to use all our senses. A touch from someone’s hand may remind us of a loved one who has died. Hearing a favorite song may remind us of school days gone by. The taste of turkey may recall a Thanksgiving holiday. The aroma of flowers may bring back the memories of a vacation.

What goes on in the mind will affect the body. Research has shown that 70% of illness is caused by stress. Some studies have found imagery for relief of pain can stimulate the body’s natural painkillers (known as endorphins). There is documentation that the immune system can be enhanced with imagery work. PET scans have shown that parts of the brain are activated in a positive way whether the body is actively performing a task or just imagining it. Athletes frequently use imagery to improve their performance.

Try this exercise:

Imagine a lemon for a moment. Imagine a knife cutting into its thick yellow skin and lemon juice sprays onto your hand. Cut a slice of the lemon and bring it to your lips. Bite into the slice of lemon. Feel the sensation of lemon juice on your tongue and in your mouth. What does your mouth feel like? Do you feel the puckering of your lips, the sour taste in your mouth? Look at how your body changed by just imagining a lemon!

The Technique of Interactive Guided Imagery SM

“Everything we behold comes from the unknown.”    --Deepak Chopra

Visualization may limit you to only using your visual sense. Traditional guided imagery follows a script. “You may be in the mountains, or at the ocean.” Your mind may try to go places to fit the description of the imagery guide. This process may decrease your ability to be creative with your imagery. Hypnosis is a more directed form of imagery work where a specific idea is focused on in order to create change in your behavior.

Again this process may decrease your ability to be creative with your imagery.

However, Interactive Guided Imagery SM is a client-directed imagery using all your senses. In a non-judgmental and safe setting you create your own image to represent your issue or concern.  As your guide I gently guide you at your own pace into a state of relaxation. Once relaxed I will ask you to bring an image to mind that represents your particular area of question or concern. Then you will be guided to interact and dialogue with your image in order to access its meaning and wisdom for you. At the end of the session I will coach you through processing the information you have learned and developing a plan to turn your insight into action.
